ABOVE: This shot was taken at Fremont Dragstrip in 1967, I was in the passenger seat taking photos of the ride down the quarter mile with Chuck Poole in his ChuckWagon 2, this was one of many professional wheelstanders of the late 60's. Others were the "Little Red Wagon" also a dodge pickup, Wild Bill Strewsberry driving the "Hurst Hemi Under Glass" and in the late 70's Richard Schroder who was a local announcer at many of the California drag strips that drove a Chevy Dually Crew Cab wheelstanding pickup. These were great crowd pleasers and would do a wheelie in both directions many times scrapping the tailgate that had a bar of Titanium plate that would lay a huge tail of sparks. This type of wheelstanding was a lot more fun to watch than one that lasted for only a few seconds and ended up in a bunch of torn up parts.
BELOW: Here is a rare site, this photo was taken in 1965 at Lions Drag Strip, I believe it was Waterman and Hampshires top fuel car. I was standing behind a four foot tall wooden guard rail next to the ambulance. As you can see they pulled an awesome wheelie while smoking the tires ( back then, fuel cars smoked the tires during most of the run because then didn't have slider clutches or gearboxes and the ET's were in the mid 7's with speeds just over 200mph.) This shot was the cover for a special one time issue of Drag News featuring 64 pages of my photos taken from the previous 12 months while I was track photographer of Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, California. This track was also called the beach.
